The Dishui Lake Metro Station urban furniture project is located at the intersection of the metro station exit, the city bus terminal, and the entrance to future underground commercial spaces. Originally, the site consisted of a large expanse of hard paving, where public activity space functioned merely as a transit corridor for hurried pedestrian movement.
Through the introduction of urban art furniture, the design reactivated the site and transformed it into a more engaging public environment.
The design extracted the primary pedestrian circulation routes across the plaza, preserving fast-moving pathways between the metro station, bus terminal, and surrounding city streets. Between these circulation lines, three groups of semi-enclosed steel rod structures were inserted into the space.
These steel elements establish the boundaries of the urban furniture system while simultaneously creating inward-focused gathering spaces, reducing the overwhelming scale of the original plaza. The bright orange finish of the steel framework further enhances the sense of activity and attraction, encouraging people to pause and stay within the space.
At the same time, the steel structure introduces multiple modes of interaction through three different heights (450mm, 1200mm, and 2000mm), enabling a variety of user behaviors such as sitting, leaning, resting, and hanging.
The seating system consists of 17 GRC cube modules measuring 660 × 660 × 660 mm. These modules are carved according to ergonomic seating heights for users of different age groups, forming semi-curved seating spaces across three dimensional variations.
By rotating the modules, different seating and resting configurations are created. Selected seating surfaces incorporate blue pigmentation technology, echoing the “starry sky” theme of Dishui Lake while adding a playful visual character to the installation.
